When the DM moves away
D&D after your DM quits

Your DM moved away. Your group doesn't have to stop.

Keep playing online with the same friends. The game runs the world and the rules, everyone gets a character, and the friend who used to DM finally sits on the player side.

Start free, no card required.

It usually goes the same way. The DM takes a job in another city, everyone swears the group will keep playing online, and three months later the group chat is birthday messages and nobody has rolled a die.

The DM left. The table stays.

A group that loses its DM rarely loses interest in playing. It loses the person who did the prep and kept the world in their head. TableForge takes over that job, so the friendships that held the table together can keep it going.

I
🧭  The group keeps going

Nobody has to volunteer as the replacement DM or learn to run a game over a weekend. Start a campaign, send the link, and the same friends are back in a story by the next free evening.

II
🛡  Everyone gets a character

Every person in the group, the host included, plays a hero with their own sheet. The world, the NPCs, and the monsters belong to the game, so no friend has to be referee and adventurer at once.

III
🍺  The old DM finally plays

The friend who moved away can join from their new city on a free account and take a seat as a player. After years behind the screen, they get to be surprised by the story too.

Pick the old story back up, or start a new one.

Groups coming back after losing a DM usually take one of two paths, and then settle into whatever schedule life allows now.

  • ✦
Return to the world you knew. Describe the setting, the villain, and where the party left off in the campaign premise, and the DM builds the new campaign inside that world. The story your group cared about continues without anyone reconstructing the notes.
  • ✦
Or start fresh together. Pick a ready-made adventure and play tonight. A new story with no history to live up to is often the easiest way to get a quiet group chat talking again.
  • ✦
Play on the schedule you have now. Live sessions on a call when everyone is free, turns during the week when they are not. A group split across cities and time zones can still be one party.

There is still a game master. It just isn't one of you.

Losing a DM leaves a whole job empty: describing the world, voicing every NPC, running the monsters, and knowing the rules well enough to rule on them. TableForge gives the story to an AI DM and the dice, damage, and character sheets to the game itself.

That leaves the humans doing the part they came for. Each of you makes choices for one character, argues about the plan, and reacts to what the world does next. If your DM ever moves back, the chair is theirs again. Until then, nobody has to wait.

What your group's next session looks like.

The scene, the dice, each character's sheet, and the battle map, shared by everyone in the campaign wherever they live now.

A TableForge turn: a player acts, the game resolves it, and the story continues for the whole party.

Frequently asked questions

The practical details before you begin.

What do you do when your DM quits or moves away?
Most groups recruit a new DM, rotate the role, or switch to playing without a human DM. TableForge is the last option: an AI DM runs the world and the game handles the rules, so the same friends keep playing online and nobody takes over the prep.
Can our old DM still play with us from another city?
Yes. TableForge runs in the browser, so the friend who moved can join the campaign from anywhere with a free account and play a character. Sessions can be live on a call, or in turns if you now live in different time zones.
Can we continue our old campaign?
You can continue the world. Write the setting, the important characters, and where the story stopped into the campaign premise, and the DM builds a new campaign there. Characters are created fresh in TableForge from the classes and options it supports.
Does everyone in the group need a subscription?
No. The host's plan covers the seats, and everyone the host invites plays free. Counting the host, the free plan seats two people, Fellowship four, and Legendary six.
Is an AI DM as good as our old DM?
Not at what made your DM yours: knowing the group, reading the room, the running jokes. What TableForge offers is a game that is always available, needs no prep, and handles the rules, so the group has something to play while life sorts itself out.
