D&D Build GuideHow to Build a Berserker

Rage, a big weapon and no interest in defence: the classes, species, feats and masteries that make a melee damage dealer hit as hard as possible, plus three builds.

2024 RULES

What Makes a Berserker

A berserker trades caution for damage. They run at the biggest thing in the room and hit it until it stops moving. In D&D 2024 that is the barbarian's home ground:

  • RageRageLevel 1 featureYou can imbue yourself with a primal power called Rage, a force that grants you extraordinary might and resilience. You can enter it as a Bonus Action if you aren't wearing Heavy armor. adds damage to every Strength attack and gives Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing damage.
  • Reckless AttackReckless AttackLevel 2 featureYou can throw aside all concern for defense to attack with increased ferocity. When you make your first attack roll on your turn, you can decide to attack recklessly. gives you Advantage on your Strength attacks, at the cost of giving enemies Advantage against you until your next turn.
  • A heavy two-handed weapon with a weapon mastery that adds damage or knocks the target down.

Rage is what makes the trade work. Enemies hit you more often, but each hit does half damage, and a d12 hit die gives you the Hit Points to absorb it.

This guide uses the 2024 rules. Ability score increases come from your background, so any species can play any berserker.

Thrain's take

Every party needs one player who doesn't stop to plan. Charge in, but tell me who you're charging at. A barbarian who picks the right target ends fights. One who picks the nearest target ends up surrounded, which, to be fair, some of them enjoy.

When you make your first attack roll on your turn, you can decide to attack recklessly. is worth it when you are raging and the enemy hits with weapons. Skip it against a crowd of archers or a monster that hits like a cart.
  • Pick the right target. Charge the spellcaster or the leader, not the nearest goblin. Ask the DM which one looks in charge.
  • Remember you cannot cast. No spells and no Concentration while raging. If a feat or species gives you a spell, use it before you rage, and know that raging ends your own Concentration.

FAQ

Is the Path of the Berserker good in D&D 2024?

Yes. Frenzy now adds extra d6s to your first hit each turn while raging and attacking recklessly, and it no longer causes Exhaustion. It is one of the highest damage barbarian paths in the Player's Handbook.

What is the best species for a barbarian berserker?

Orc, for Relentless Endurance and Adrenaline Rush, or Goliath, for Large Form and giant ancestry. Human and Dwarf are close behind. In the 2024 rules any species works, since your background sets your ability scores.

Should a barbarian always use Reckless Attack?

Not always. It is worth it while raging against enemies who attack with weapons, since Rage halves that damage. Against spellcasters or monsters that already hit very hard, attacking without it can keep you alive.

What is the best weapon for a barbarian in D&D 2024?

A greataxe for Cleave, a greatsword for Graze or a maul for Topple. All three are good. Pick by mastery, and carry handaxes for enemies you cannot reach.
