D&D Build GuideHow to Build a Dragon Character

Scales, breath and wings: how to build a dragon-blooded hero with the dragonborn, the draconic sorcerer and the right elemental spells, plus three builds.

2024 RULES

What Makes a Dragon Character

A dragon character is about the blood of dragons showing in you. In the 2024 rules that comes from two places, and they stack well:

Add spells of your element, and a character who talks like they are owed a hoard, and you have a dragon. Your background sets your ability scores in 2024, so a dragonborn can play any class without losing anything.

Thrain's take

Pick your color first and build everything around it. A red dragonborn sorcerer who throws fire, resists fire and lands in the middle of the fight on burning wings is a character the whole table remembers. A green one who breathes poison at a crypt full of skeletons is a lesson.

The Dragonborn: Breath, Resistance and Flight

  • Breath Weapon. When you take the Attack action, replace one of your attacks with a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line. Each creature in it makes a Dexterity save against DC 8 + your Constitution modifier + your Proficiency Bonus, taking 1d10 damage (half on a success). It grows to 2d10 at level 5, 3d10 at 11 and 4d10 at 17. You can use it a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest.
  • Damage Resistance to your ancestry's damage type.
  • Draconic Flight. From level 5, sprout spectral wings as a Bonus Action for 10 minutes, with a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. Once per Long Rest.

Because the breath replaces one attack, classes with Extra Attack can breathe and still swing a weapon in the same turn. Because the DC uses Constitution, it stays reliable on any class that keeps Constitution high.

Draconic ancestries

Fire: Red, Gold or Brass
Fire resistance is the most useful one, and fire matches the most iconic dragon spells. Plenty of fiends and fire creatures resist it, so carry a second element.

Lightning: Blue or Bronze

Epic
Acid: Black or Copper
Very few monsters resist acid, but acid resistance comes up less often than the others.
Rare
Poison: Green
Poison resistance is great defense, but many undead, constructs and fiends are immune to poison, so your breath often does nothing.

Playing a Dragon Character at the Table

  • Aim the breath. A Line hits enemies standing in a corridor, a Cone hits a group in front of you. Position before you breathe, and tell your allies to step out of the way.
  • Count your uses. Breath Weapon uses equal your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest. Spend them on groups, not on a single enemy you could hit with a sword.
  • Know what resists you. Fire against a fire elemental does nothing. A second element, from a spell or a different Elemental Affinity, saves the fight.
  • Play the pride. Dragons hoard, hold grudges and expect respect. A little of that goes a long way in a conversation.

FAQ

What is the best class for a dragonborn in D&D 2024?

The sorcerer with Draconic Sorcery, for scales, extra hit points, an element that matches your breath and real wings at level 14. Fighter, paladin and barbarian are also strong, because Extra Attack lets you breathe and still swing your weapon.

How does the dragonborn breath weapon work in 2024?

When you take the Attack action, you can replace one attack with a 15-foot Cone or 30-foot Line. Targets make a Dexterity save against 8 + your Constitution modifier + your Proficiency Bonus, taking 1d10 damage, rising to 4d10 by level 17. You get uses equal to your Proficiency Bonus per Long Rest.

Can dragonborn fly in D&D 2024?

Yes. From character level 5, Draconic Flight gives you spectral wings as a Bonus Action for 10 minutes, with a Fly Speed equal to your Speed, once per Long Rest. A draconic sorcerer also gets Dragon Wings at level 14.

Which dragonborn color is best?

Red, gold or brass (fire) for the strongest spell list and the most useful resistance. Blue or bronze (lightning) and silver or white (cold) are about as good. Green (poison) is the weakest on offense, since many monsters are immune to poison.
