D&D Build GuideBest Class for Beginners

All twelve 2024 classes rated for a first character: how much there is to track, how forgiving they are, and three builds that are easy to play from the first turn.

2024 RULES

What Makes a Class Good for Beginners

Every class in D&D can be learned in a session or two. Some are just easier to enjoy while you are still learning. A good first class has four things:

  • Durability. Plenty of hit points and good armor, so a bad decision costs you a few hit points instead of the fight.
  • Few choices per turn. You know what to do when your turn comes around, and you can spend your attention on the story.
  • Few resources to track. No long list of spell slots to count down across the day.
  • A clear job. "Hit the biggest enemy" or "keep everyone standing" is easier to play than "solve whatever comes up".

This guide uses the 2024 rules. Your background sets your ability score increases and gives you a first feat, so you can play any species with any class and still have the right scores.

Thrain's take

Pick the character you want to be, not the one that sounds easiest. A new player who loves their wizard learns the spells. A new player who picked the fighter because someone told them to spends the session on their phone. Then, if you are torn between two, take the one with more hit points.

Your First Sessions

  • Know your one good move. For a fighter it is attacking. For a cleric it is keeping someone up. When you are unsure, do that.
  • Say what you want, not which rule to use. "I want to get past the guard" is enough. Your Dungeon Master will tell you which roll to make.
  • Read your sheet between turns. Learn one new feature or spell each session instead of all of them at once.
  • Ask questions. Every experienced player asked the same ones. "Can I do this?" is a good question, and the answer is often yes.

FAQ

What is the best class for beginners in D&D 2024?

The fighter. It has heavy armor, good hit points, a self-heal in Second Wind and simple turns. The barbarian is just as easy and even harder to kill. If you want to cast spells, the cleric or paladin are the gentlest start.

What is the hardest class for a beginner?

The wizard, druid and sorcerer ask the most of a new player: a lot of spells to choose from, few hit points (wizard and sorcerer) or Wild Shape stat blocks to learn (druid). They are still playable as a first character if you are excited about them.

Is the rogue good for beginners?

Yes. A rogue attacks once a turn, adds Sneak Attack, and uses Cunning Action to hide or step away. It is less forgiving than a fighter because of its lower hit points and lighter armor.

What is the best spellcaster for a beginner?

The cleric. Heavy armor from the Protector order keeps you safe while you learn your spells, and healing is always useful. The warlock is also easy, since Eldritch Blast does the work every turn.
