Under the 2014 rules your race sets your ability score increases. The standard human, the one in the SRD, gets +1 to every score: six points in total, more than any other race, but spread thin. It suits classes that need three or more good scores, like the paladin and monk.
The Player's Handbook also has an optional variant human: +1 to two scores, one extra skill and a feat at level 1. Most tables allow it, and it is one of the strongest race choices in 5e, because no other Player's Handbook race starts with a feat.
Thrain's take
Players call the human boring right up until the variant human fighter takes Great Weapon Master at level 1 and spends the first four levels hitting harder than anyone else. The standard human is fine. The variant human is why half the tables I run have a human on them. Ask your DM which one you get before you build.
Strengths
- Standard: +1 to every score, the most points of any race
- Variant: a feat at level 1, three levels before anyone else
- Variant: an extra skill
- Fits any class, so there is no wrong pick
Weaknesses
- No Darkvision, resistance or special senses
- Standard human's +1s are wasted on even scores
- The variant human depends on your DM allowing it
Human Traits

Variant Human
+1 to two scores, a skill and a feat at level 1. Great Weapon Master, Sharpshooter, Polearm Master or War Caster from the first session. Player's Handbook, optional rule.
Legendary
Standard Human
+1 to every score. Best on classes that need Strength or Dexterity, Constitution and a casting score at once. With point buy you can start with three 16s.
Rare
The standard human is in the SRD and is what the builds below use. If your table allows the variant human, take it for almost any build and spend the feat on the ones listed under Feats.
Best Classes for a Human
These ratings assume the variant human. A standard human is a solid pick for any class, and best on the paladin, monk and ranger, which need several good scores.
Fighter
Great Weapon Master or Sharpshooter at level 1 and more Ability Score Improvements than any class, so the human fighter gets the most feats in the game.
Legendary
Paladin
Polearm Master or Great Weapon Master at level 1. The standard human also suits the paladin's need for Strength, Constitution and Charisma.
Legendary
Barbarian
Great Weapon Master with Reckless Attack from level 2. Advantage offsets the feat's -5 to hit.
Epic
Ranger
Sharpshooter at level 1 for an archer, and the standard human covers Dexterity, Wisdom and Constitution.
Epic
Rogue
Crossbow Expert for a bonus-action attack, a second chance at Sneak Attack. Or Alert to always go first.
Epic
Wizard
War Caster or Resilient (Constitution) to keep concentration from level 1. A gnome or high elf gives more Intelligence; the feat is the trade.

Monk
The standard human's spread suits a monk who needs Dexterity, Wisdom and Constitution. Mobile is a good variant feat.

War Caster or Resilient for concentration. A Hill Dwarf or Wood Elf gives more Wisdom.

Best Level 1 Feats for a Variant Human
All of these are Player's Handbook feats, so check that your table uses feats at all:

- Sharpshooter: the same trade for ranged weapons, no Disadvantage at long range, and it ignores half and three-quarters cover. Archers.
- Polearm Master: a bonus-action attack with a glaive, halberd or quarterstaff, and an attack when enemies step into reach.
- Crossbow Expert: a bonus-action hand crossbow attack. Rogues and fighters.
- War Caster or Resilient (Constitution): keep concentration. Clerics, wizards, druids, sorcerers.
- Lucky or Alert: good on anyone.

Fighter or paladin with the variant human, taking Great Weapon Master, Sharpshooter or Polearm Master at level 1. A standard human is best on classes that need three good scores, like the paladin or monk.
