The 2024 halfling is one species with no subraces. Every halfling gets Luck, which rerolls natural 1s on attacks, checks and saves, plus Brave against fear, the ability to slip through bigger creatures' spaces, and a way to hide behind your own allies. The old Lightfoot and Stout options are gone.
Your background sets your ability scores, so a halfling fits any class. The traits favor characters who roll a lot of d20s and want to stay out of sight.
Thrain's take
Every table has a story about the natural 1 that ruined everything. Halflings do not have that story. They reroll it. Pair that with hiding behind the party's fighter and you get the character who somehow survives every bad plan. Usually theirs.
Strengths
- Luck: reroll any natural 1 on an attack roll, ability check or saving throw
- Brave: Advantage on saves against being Frightened
- Naturally Stealthy: hide behind a creature one size larger, such as your own party
- Halfling Nimbleness: move through the space of larger creatures
Weaknesses
- No Darkvision
- No spells, resistances or extra hit points
- Small size limits which creatures you can grapple and ride
Halfling Traits
Brave
Advantage on saving throws to avoid or end the Frightened condition. Fear spells keep a whole party from closing in; you are far more likely to shrug them off.
Halfling Nimbleness
Move through the space of any creature at least one size larger than you. You cannot end your move there.
Luck
When you roll a 1 on the d20 of a D20 Test (an attack roll, ability check or saving throw), reroll it and use the new roll. No limit on uses.
Naturally Stealthy
You can take the Hide action when the only thing hiding you is a creature at least one size larger than you. A Medium ally counts.
Best Classes for a Halfling
Legendary: build around it
Epic: excellent
Rare: good
Uncommon: works
Common: weak fit
Rogue
Naturally Stealthy plus Cunning Action means you can hide behind the fighter every turn and Sneak Attack from there. Luck keeps your one attack a turn from whiffing on a 1.
Legendary
Bard
A bard rolls lots of skill checks, and Luck protects every one. Brave keeps the party's support standing when fear spells go off.
Epic
Ranger
An archer who hides behind the front line and slips through gaps. Luck helps on the many attack rolls.
Epic
Monk
Monks make several attack rolls a turn from level 1, so Luck triggers often. Nimbleness lets you dance through larger enemies to reach their casters.
Epic
Wizard
Luck applies to Concentration saves, and hiding behind an ally is a fine place for a wizard to stand.
Rare
Sorcerer
Like the wizard: safer Concentration and a place to hide. No help with spells.

Rare
Fighter
More attacks, more natural 1s rerolled. A Dexterity fighter fits best; Heavy melee weapons need Strength 13, size does not matter.
Rare
Cleric
Brave and Luck keep a healer acting. Nothing else in the halfling helps divine casting.
Rare
Druid
A Wisdom caster who appreciates a reroll on Concentration saves.
Rare
Paladin
The paladin's own aura protects against fear later, so Brave overlaps. Luck still helps.
Uncommon
Barbarian
Works with Strength 13 for a Heavy weapon, and Luck on Reckless Attack rolls is nice. You give up a lot of reach and presence.

Halfling FAQ
Is the halfling good in D&D 2024?
Yes, especially for rogues and anyone who rolls a lot of d20s. Luck rerolls every natural 1 on attacks, checks and saves, Brave protects against fear, and Naturally Stealthy lets you hide behind your allies. It has no Darkvision.
Are there Lightfoot and Stout halflings in D&D 2024?
No. The 2024 rules have one halfling with no subraces. Naturally Stealthy, the old Lightfoot trait, is part of every halfling. Stout's poison resistance is gone.
How does halfling Luck work in D&D 2024?
When you roll a 1 on the d20 for an attack roll, ability check or saving throw, you reroll it and must use the new roll. There is no limit on how often it works.
Can a halfling use heavy weapons in D&D 2024?
Yes. Small size no longer matters for Heavy weapons in the 2024 rules. You need a Strength of 13 or higher for Heavy melee weapons, like any other species.
