For a lot of players, Baldur's Gate 3 creates a very specific problem: it makes them want to play D&D.
Not another fantasy game with a skill tree. D&D. A character of their own, a plan typed nowhere in a dialogue menu, dice that can ruin it, and a world that has to respond.

It also delivers what generated campaigns currently cannot:
- Fully performed companions with authored long-term arcs.
- Cinematic direction, music, animation, and production design.
- Carefully built locations dense with intentional detail.
- Encounters tested and tuned by professional designers.
- Foreshadowing and payoffs placed across a finite story.
- Environmental interactions implemented consistently across the game.
If you want a polished video game, play BG3. An AI-generated tabletop campaign is not a higher-budget sequel hiding in a browser tab.
Where even BG3 has to stop
Every video game recognizes a finite set of actions. BG3 recognizes far more than most, but the developers still had to implement them.
You can stack crates because crates have systems. You can persuade a particular character because dialogue and outcomes were written. You cannot announce that your bard starts a courier company, recruit three goblins as employees, spend the next month undercutting the Sword Coast postal trade, and expect the entire campaign to rebuild itself around logistics unless the shipped game supports some version of that plan.
A human DM can say, “All right, how are you finding customers?”
That is tabletop freedom. It is not unlimited success. You can attempt almost anything, but the world and rules still decide what follows.
What an AI DM adds
