If you've used AI Dungeon and gone looking for something else, it's usually for one of two reasons: you want the story to hold together better, or you want it to actually be D&D. Those are different problems with different answers, so this post separates them.
We make one of the tools discussed here (TableForge), so this isn't a neutral review. What follows is an honest account of the difference in category, which matters more than any feature list.
What AI Dungeon actually is
AI Dungeon is a generative fiction sandbox. You write what your character does, the model writes what happens next, and the two of you build a story together. Its defining quality is permissiveness: it will play along with almost anything you write, in any genre, with no structure imposed on you.
That is a real and legitimate product, and it's good at what it does. Freeform, surprising, occasionally very funny collaborative fiction is genuinely hard to get elsewhere. If you like writing yourself into strange corners and seeing what the model does with them, nothing about a rules engine improves that experience.
What it is not is a system for playing Dungeons & Dragons. There is no enforced ruleset, no real dice, no character sheet that updates itself, and no mechanical combat resolution. When you "attack the goblin," nothing rolls. The model writes a sentence about attacking a goblin.
The two reasons people look for an alternative
"The story stops holding together"
This is a structural property of freeform generative tools, not a bug in any particular one. The story lives in a context window. As it grows, earlier material falls out of that window, and the model reconstructs what it can from whatever's left. NPCs drift. A character who was a grim mercenary in chapter one is warm and chatty by chapter six. Promises don't get kept because nothing recorded that a promise was made.
Tools in this category offer memory features to fight this, and they help. But they are summaries being fed back into a prompt, not a database. The failure mode is softer, not gone.
The fix is structured campaign state: NPCs, locations, quests, and consequences stored as data, not as prose the model has to re-read. That is a design decision a tool either made or didn't.
"I want it to actually be D&D"
This is the bigger gap and the easier one to describe.

That last row is the one people underestimate. In a freeform sandbox, you don't really lose, because the model is cooperative and there's no mechanism that says otherwise. Stakes come from a system that can tell you no. Real dice and real HP are what make a fight tense, and they're exactly what a fiction sandbox leaves out on purpose.
What to use instead, by what you want
You want freeform storytelling, any genre, no rules. Stay in the sandbox category. A rules engine would only get in your way, and D&D-specific tools will feel restrictive.
You want to keep the freeform feel but with a world that remembers. Look for structured persistent state and campaign memory rather than better prompting. This is the feature to compare across tools, and it's usually documented poorly, so try the free tiers.
You want an actual D&D 5e campaign. You want a purpose-built AI dungeon master with a real rules engine. There are a few worth trying. The thing to check is whether rules are adjudicated in code or improvised by the model, because everything else follows from that.
You want to play with friends. Check multiplayer specifically. Much of the category is solo-only or solo-first, and "multiplayer" sometimes means one person relaying for everyone else.
