Multiplayer AI Dungeon Masters Compared

The short answer

TableForge, Friends & Fables, and AI Dungeon all let several humans join one AI-guided adventure, but they do not offer the same kind of game. TableForge is the strongest fit when a party wants D&D 5e mechanics with canonical quests, character inventory, equipment, XP, and asynchronous play. Friends & Fables is the closest AI-run alternative and is stronger for custom worldbuilding. AI Dungeon is best for permissive group storytelling without enforced 5e rules. Roll20 and Foundry offer excellent online multiplayer tools, character sheets, and maps, but a human still has to prepare and run the game.

The best multiplayer AI Dungeon Master depends on whether your group wants a D&D game, a freeform story, or a virtual table for a human GM. Those products can all advertise multiplayer while solving very different problems.

Every product in this table supports actual multi-user access. The deciding question is what happens after everybody joins.

What counts as true multiplayer?

For this comparison, true multiplayer means that several humans can join the same online game under separate identities and contribute directly. That excludes a host relaying friends' messages into one private chatbot session.

It does not automatically mean the product runs D&D. A useful D&D comparison adds four harder questions:

The first question separates a party from a group prompt. The second separates a game engine from collaborative prose. The third separates AI Dungeon Masters from conventional VTTs. The fourth determines whether the campaign works for the schedules real groups have.

TableForge: best for a persistent 5e party without a DM

TableForge gives each player their own account and character inside one campaign. Parties can include up to six players depending on the host's plan, invited players join free, and the same campaign supports live and asynchronous turns.

Its main advantage is the amount of shared state that lives outside narration. The campaign tracks a current objective, milestones, open leads, unresolved rewards, NPC relationships, world state, scenes, and story summaries. Each character has a persistent sheet with HP, AC, abilities, skills, saving throws, spell slots, hit dice, death saves, conditions, inspiration, currency, spells, and equipment.

The inventory is not a text note. Items are stored on a character with quantities, equipment slots, attunement, custom names, notes, and acquisition sources. Supported equipment feeds mechanics such as Armor Class. Loot, purchases, item removal, and currency changes produce campaign events.

XP is also mechanical. TableForge stores total experience per character, calculates level from 5e thresholds, and opens a level-up flow when a threshold is crossed. That flow handles HP gains, ability score choices, spell slot progression, and supported spell learning.

The tradeoff is scope. TableForge is built around supported 5e SRD content. It does not currently offer the open-ended homebrew world builder that Friends & Fables does, and it cannot import every official module or third-party PDF. How TableForge multiplayer works covers its party loop in detail.

Friends & Fables: the closest AI-run competitor

Friends & Fables is a genuine multiplayer AI tabletop product, not a chatbot wrapper. Its official site supports parties up to six and describes Franz as an AI game master that narrates, adjudicates rules, and reacts to the world. Its getting started guide includes inviting friends, choosing inventory, and managing the campaign from the sidebar.

It also has serious game state. Friends & Fables has published quest, health, inventory, item, spellcasting, travel, map, token, lore, and worldbuilding systems. The product explicitly aims to support campaigns that continue asynchronously.

Choose it when your group wants to build and customize a world. Custom lore, locations, NPCs, monsters, items, spells, maps, and shared public worlds are central to the product.

The architectural tradeoff is adjudication. Franz is an agentic referee that interprets actions and operates game tools. TableForge gives more final authority to programmatic rules systems and uses the AI primarily for interpretation and narration. AI Dungeon: real multiplayer, but not a 5e party system

AI Dungeon does have real multiplayer. Its official multiplayer guide explains how a host creates a game, shares an eight-digit code, manages joined players, and uses the host's AI model settings for the group. The guide currently says there is no fixed participant limit.

That corrects a common outdated description of AI Dungeon as solo-only. Several humans can directly share one adventure, and players can exit without leaving so they can return later.

The distinction is the game underneath. AI Dungeon describes itself as an AI-guided roleplay and interactive storytelling tool. Participants submit actions to a shared generated story. Plot Components and Story Cards help the model retain relevant facts, but there is no native D&D 5e engine that owns each player's legal actions, equipment slots, XP thresholds, spell resources, initiative, or quest state.

Choose AI Dungeon when your group wants permissive collaborative fiction and does not want a rules system pushing back. Choose a purpose-built AI tabletop when a missed attack must stay missed, a used potion must leave the correct inventory, and a level must come from recorded progression. Roll20: excellent multiplayer for a human-run table

Roll20 is a mature online VTT. Its player management guide documents separate Creator, GM, and Player roles, invitations, permissions, and shared game access. Its official D&D sheets track basic statistics, inventory, character level, abilities, and rolls. The compendium can populate items, equipment, spells, monsters, and other sheet data.

That is real and capable multiplayer. It is also a different job. The creator or a promoted GM still builds and runs the adventure, assigns permissions, reveals information, controls NPCs, and adjudicates the table. Roll20 reduces the human DM's workload rather than removing the role.

Choose Roll20 when somebody wants to DM and the group wants a hosted browser VTT with a large marketplace and established tooling. If nobody wants the job, adding character automation does not solve the missing-GM problem. Our guide to using Roll20 without a DM lays out the available workarounds.

Foundry VTT: deepest control for groups willing to run it

Foundry VTT is another full multiplayer tabletop. Its player orientation covers joining a hosted session, claiming a character, opening owned sheets, moving tokens, rolling in chat, and using the combat tracker. Foundry's current FAQ says one license can host a game for an unlimited number of players.

It is strongest when the GM wants control and customization. Game systems and modules can automate detailed mechanics, while scenes, actors, items, journals, permissions, lighting, audio, and maps support elaborate online tables.

The cost is operational and human setup. Foundry's hosting guide explains that a session has one host and several clients. Self-hosted worlds are available only while the host application is running, while cloud or partner hosting can keep them accessible. Either way, a human GM or assistant still builds and runs the campaign.

Choose Foundry when somebody enjoys that control and is comfortable maintaining the world and hosting stack. Choose an AI DM when the group's blocker is not VTT capability but the absence of a willing referee.

Quests, inventory, and XP are the useful dividing line

"Persistent memory" is too broad to compare products well. A saved transcript is memory. A Story Card is memory. A character database is memory. They do not provide the same guarantees.

Ask each tool to show exactly where these facts live:

  1. Quest state. Is there a visible current objective, completed milestone, open lead, and unresolved reward, or only a paragraph the AI may reinterpret?
  2. Inventory. Does a specific character own a specific quantity of an item? Can it be equipped, consumed, bought, removed, and used in later mechanics?
  3. XP and progression. Is experience a numeric value tied to thresholds and a level-up workflow, or can the story simply announce a new level?
  4. Resources and consequences. Are HP, spell slots, conditions, death saves, rests, currency, and initiative stored and validated?
  5. Party authority. Can every player see the same result, while controlling only the character they own?

Roll20 and Foundry can store much of this, but the human GM remains responsible for the campaign logic. AI Dungeon focuses on flexible story continuity instead. Which one should your group choose?
